Ten die, six injured in Ogun highway crash

Ten people were killed and six others injured in a fatal road accident at Sapade Bridge along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday night, according to the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC).

The crash, which occurred around 8:05 p.m., involved a Sinotruk Dangote truck and a Toyota Hiace commercial bus. A total of 18 passengers were involved in the accident.

FRSC said the victims comprised 15 adult men, two adult women and one male child. Nine adult men and the child died, while six passengers sustained injuries. Two others escaped unhurt.

According to the Ogun Sector Command, emergency responders evacuated the injured to Victory Hospital in Ogere for treatment, while the bodies of the deceased were deposited at FOS Mortuary in Ipara.

Preliminary investigations identified excessive speed, dangerous driving and wrongful overtaking as the major causes of the crash.

Officials also found that the truck driver had allegedly reversed on the expressway after missing his route.

The commercial bus, reportedly travelling at high speed, attempted to squeeze through the limited space but rammed into the reversing truck, resulting in the deadly collision.

Ogun FRSC Sector Commander Oludare Ogunjobi sympathised with the victims’ families and urged motorists, especially commercial drivers and truck operators, to avoid reversing on highways, speeding and other traffic violations that contribute to fatal crashes.
