Senate Recalls Members From Recess Over Rising Insecurity

The Senate has suspended its ongoing legislative recess and summoned lawmakers for an emergency plenary session to address urgent national concerns, particularly the worsening security situation across the country.

In a notice issued on June 15 and signed by the Clerk of the Senate, Emmanuel Odo, senators were directed to reconvene at the National Assembly Complex in Abuja on Tuesday, June 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m.

The recall was ordered by Senate President Godswill Akpabio, who said the emergency sitting became necessary due to pressing matters of national importance requiring immediate legislative attention, especially issues relating to insecurity.

Lawmakers had earlier proceeded on recess expected to run until July 7, 2026, to allow for constituency engagements and Democracy Day activities before the sudden change in schedule.

The emergency session comes amid rising concerns over insecurity, including terrorism, banditry and kidnapping, which have prompted renewed calls for stronger legislative and executive action.

The Senate is also expected to deliberate on ongoing constitutional amendment proposals aimed at restructuring Nigeria’s policing system, including moves toward the creation of state police.

The sitting will provide an opportunity for lawmakers to review security challenges and consider further reforms aimed at strengthening the country’s internal security framework.
