A 32-year-old dispatch rider, Emmanuel Jegede, has died after suspected hoodlums allegedly pushed him off his motorcycle during an attempted extortion along the Ikotun-Idimu Road in Lagos’ Alimosho Local Government Area.
The incident reportedly happened on Wednesday morning shortly after Jegede completed a delivery and was travelling to another destination.
Witnesses alleged that two hoodlums confronted him at the Alhaja area, pushed him while his motorcycle was in motion and caused him to lose control.
According to eyewitnesses, the rider crashed into the road median, suffering fatal injuries. Residents who rushed to the scene found him lifeless before emergency assistance could arrive.
Another witness claimed the incident followed a minor collision between the dispatch rider and a tricycle operator. The disagreement was reportedly resolved by residents, but the hoodlums allegedly demanded money from Jegede for mediating the dispute.
The witness said the rider explained he had no money, after which the suspects allegedly waited for him on the road and attacked him as he rode away. The hoodlums were said to have fled immediately after the crash.
Officers from the Idimu Police Division later evacuated the body, while efforts began to identify and apprehend those responsible for the incident.
Confirming the case, the Lagos State Police Command said investigators had received conflicting accounts of what happened and were reviewing CCTV footage from the area to establish whether the rider was attacked or lost control while trying to avoid a pedestrian.
Investigations are ongoing.
