FG Releases Five-Month Allowance Arrears for University Lecturers

The Federal Government has released funds for the payment of five months’ accumulated Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance owed to lecturers in federal universities and has directed vice-chancellors to immediately clear all outstanding payments.

Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, gave the directive in a letter dated June 4, 2026, addressed to vice-chancellors, instructing them to ensure prompt disbursement to eligible academic staff in line with the 2025 agreement between the Federal Government and ASUU.

According to the minister, the release of funds is part of efforts to fulfil commitments made under the FGN/ASUU agreement aimed at improving lecturers’ welfare and strengthening industrial harmony in the university system.

He further directed universities that had previously advanced payments from internally generated revenue to ensure proper refunds once federal allocations are received, while also insisting on strict compliance with financial regulations and proper documentation.

The directive is expected to bring relief to thousands of lecturers across federal universities who have long complained about delays in welfare-related entitlements, including allowances tied to research, teaching materials and academic tools.

The Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance has remained a recurring point of contention in negotiations between the government and ASUU, often featuring in disputes over welfare, funding and working conditions in universities.

Stakeholders say timely payment of such allowances is crucial to improving academic morale, boosting research output and maintaining stability in Nigeria’s public university system.
