The Federal Government has suspended its proposed increase in registration fees for the 2027 WAEC and NECO senior secondary school examinations.
The Federal Ministry of Education said the proposal has been withdrawn to allow for wider consultations with stakeholders before any final decision is made.
According to the ministry, the planned adjustment was driven by rising costs of conducting credible examinations, including logistics, security, printing, technology deployment and quality assurance.
Minister of Education, Dr. Maruf Tunji Alausa, directed that the proposal be put on hold in line with the government’s commitment to transparent and inclusive policymaking.
The ministry said it would engage examination bodies, state education ministries, school owners, parents, organised labour and other stakeholders during the review process.
It added that the proposed fee increase will not take effect until the consultation process is completed and a final decision is reached.
The ministry reaffirmed that students’ welfare, equitable access to quality education and responsible policymaking remain central to the Federal Government’s education agenda.
