UBEC mobilises over ₦100bn in education grants, invests ₦20.4bn in teacher training

The Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) says it has facilitated the mobilisation of more than ₦100 billion in previously unaccessed matching grants by states and the Federal Capital Territory to improve the quality of basic education across Nigeria.

UBEC Executive Secretary, Hajiya Aisha Garba, disclosed this in Abuja while highlighting the commission’s achievements under its 2025–2031 Strategic Blueprint, which aligns with the Federal Government’s Renewed Hope Agenda and focuses on improving school infrastructure, teacher development and access to quality education.

Garba said the funds are being used through State Universal Basic Education Boards to improve learning environments nationwide. She noted that the intervention has resulted in the construction of over 4,600 classrooms, renovation of more than 6,100 classrooms, provision of 2,780 toilets, 678 boreholes and over 334,000 pieces of school furniture.

She added that UBEC has supported the establishment of more than 2,300 Early Childhood Care Development and Education Centres to strengthen foundational learning for young children.

According to her, the commission has invested over ₦20.4 billion in teacher professional development to improve classroom teaching, strengthen school leadership and enhance accountability through the Effective Schools Programme and School-Based Management Committees.

Garba said UBEC is also expanding digital education through Digital Literacy Centres, Smart Schools and the introduction of Artificial Intelligence, coding and robotics into learning. She added that more than 7.8 million instructional materials have been distributed to schools to improve literacy and numeracy.

She urged governments, communities, parents, teachers, development partners and the media to work together to ensure every Nigerian child has access to safe, inclusive and quality basic education, while commending journalists for promoting transparency and accountability in the education sector.
