Nigeria, Qatar Libraries Sign Digital Knowledge Partnership

The National Library of Nigeria and Qatar National Library have signed a partnership agreement aimed at strengthening digital knowledge, research, professional development and the preservation of cultural heritage in both countries.

The agreement was signed on August 12 during the 99th World Library and Information Congress in Busan, South Korea. National Librarian Prof. Chinwe Veronica Anunobi signed for Nigeria, while Qatar National Library Executive Director Huism Tan represented Qatar.

Under the agreement, both institutions will collaborate on knowledge exchange, digital transformation, research, cultural heritage preservation, professional training and public engagement. They will also exchange educational materials, publications and professional expertise while developing joint content and cultural programmes.

Anunobi described the partnership as a milestone in Nigeria’s efforts to expand its knowledge and cultural diplomacy beyond Africa. She said it would create opportunities for West Africa and the Middle East to exchange expertise, innovations and best practices in library services.

The collaboration will cover areas including digital repositories, electronic resources, automation, smart library systems, digital preservation and conservation. It is also expected to strengthen the capacity of library professionals through staff training and technical knowledge exchange.

Anunobi said discussions between the institutions began following First Lady Oluremi Tinubu’s visit to Qatar National Library in October 2025. The National Library of Nigeria subsequently visited Qatar earlier in 2026 to identify areas for technical collaboration and innovative technology adoption.

The partnership is expected to improve access to Nigeria’s documentary and cultural heritage by supporting digitisation and preservation while connecting Nigerian knowledge resources and professionals with international expertise. It forms part of the National Library’s broader effort to reposition itself as a modern knowledge hub and global gateway to Nigeria’s documentary heritage.
