Kurmin Wali community in Kajuru Local Government Area of Kaduna State has been deserted after gunmen abducted 177 Christian worshippers during coordinated attacks on three churches. Eleven victims later escaped, leaving 166—mostly women and children—still in captivity.
Residents said the attack, which happened during Sunday services, was carried out by armed men wielding AK-47 rifles. The abductors have reportedly demanded the replacement of 17 motorcycles allegedly lost during recent military operations, valued at about ₦29m, before any ransom negotiations can begin.
The incident initially sparked controversy after state officials and police dismissed reports of the abduction, but the Force Public Relations Officer later confirmed the kidnappings. Villagers said fear has shut down farming, schools and markets, forcing many residents to flee.
Military sources linked the attack to bandits fleeing sustained offensives in neighbouring Kauru LGA, describing it as retaliatory. Troops are said to be on hot pursuit, with some terrorist camps destroyed and three victims rescued in separate operations.
The abduction has drawn widespread condemnation. Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar criticised peace deals that favour criminals, while CAN faulted security agencies over poor communication. Governor Uba Sani visited the community, assuring residents of intensified efforts to rescue the captives and restore peace.
