The Federal Government has filed a 13-count charge before the Federal High Court in Abuja against six individuals over an alleged plot to wage war against Nigeria and commit acts of terrorism.
Those named include retired Major General Mohammed Gana, retired Naval Captain Erasmus Victor, Inspector Ahmed Ibrahim, Zekeri Umoru, Bukar Goni, and Abdulkadir Sani. A former Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Timipre Sylva, is also listed in the charge but is said to be at large.
The defendants are expected to be arraigned on Wednesday, April 22, before Justice Joyce Abdulmalik. The charges were filed by the Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Rotimi Oyedepo (SAN).
The government accused them of conspiring in 2025 to “levy war against the state” and allegedly plotting to overpower the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, offences said to be punishable under the Criminal Code.
They were also accused of failing to report knowledge of a planned treasonable act and not taking steps to prevent its execution despite alleged awareness of the plot.
Beyond treason allegations, the defendants are facing charges under the Terrorism (Prevention and Prohibition) Act, 2022, including conspiracy to commit terrorism and providing support for terrorist activities.
Prosecutors also alleged that some of the accused attended meetings linked to efforts to destabilise Nigeria’s constitutional order through political ideology.
Financial crimes were also included in the charge, with claims that certain defendants handled funds suspected to be proceeds of terrorism financing, ranging from N1 million to N50 million.
The case follows months of tension over alleged coup-related investigations, including earlier arrests of military officers and claims by security authorities that a plot to overthrow the government was uncovered during internal probes.
