Catholic bishop: Government insincerity scaring Nigerians from vaccination

Catholic Bishop of Awka Diocese in Anambra State, Most Rev. Paulinus Ezeokafor, has blamed a reported low turnout of Nigerians for COVID-19 vaccination on the government’s insincerity.

He opined that honesty on the part of government at all levels on issues surrounding the vaccines will build the people’s confidence towards going for it.

Addressing newsmen yesterday ahead of the Easter celebrations, the Prelate said although certain persons were naturally immunised, some were prone to virus infections, hence the need to be vaccinated.

He said, “Vaccines, like every other, have their side effects and it depends on individuals. For example, the reactions of chloroquine on some persons are terrible.

“I believe strongly that vaccines can help to improve the situation. I advise those who can to go for it. Thank God nobody is forced to take it like any other medication.

“Why people are hesitant is because the government at various levels has not been honest to the people. Truth about the vaccine has been scarce; deception, exaggeration everywhere.

“That’s why people are losing confidence. When you’re not trusted, even with the best products, people will look at it twice. I appeal to the government to be more honest with the people. Let’s say the truth so people can believe in us.”
