APC knocks PDP over opposition to direct primaries

The All Progressives Congress(APC) yesterday berated the Peoples Democratic‘s stance against Senate’s adoption of direct primaries in choosing candidates for elective party positions.

The ruling party posited that the development would improve the transparency and credibility of electioneering processes and internal democracy in the country.

The APC faulted PDP’s warning that the process could cause anarchy in party elections, saying the opposition party was only being “pretentious.”

APC’s position was contained in a statement by APC’s Secretary, Senator John Akpanudoedehe , in Abuja.

The ruling party was responding to PDP’s Tuesday criticism of the direct primaries passed by the APC-led Senate, noting that it was a retrogressive provision that seeks to wipe off all the gains achieved in the nation’s electoral practice since 1999.

But Akpanudoedehe said: “The APC reaffirms our commitment and support for constitutionally-permitted innovations that will improve the transparency and credibility of Nigeria’s electioneering processes and internal democracy, specifically the nomination of political party candidates.

“It is the right thing for the National Assembly to aggregate and consider the clamors by civil societies, interested stakeholders, and indeed all Nigerians on all matters requiring legislation.

“In line with our progressive mantra, the credibility of elections has continued to improve under the President Muhammadu Buhari-led APC government. Valid votes now count and past practices of electoral fraud inflicted on Nigerians by past PDP administrations are fast becoming a thing of the past.”
