Adelabu to Exit Cabinet, Eyes Oyo Governorship Race

Minister of Power Adebayo Adelabu is set to resign from the Federal Executive Council after informing President Bola Tinubu of his intention to contest the Oyo State governorship under the All Progressives Congress.

Adelabu met with the President at the Presidential Villa, where he submitted a detailed performance report outlining his achievements in the power sector over the past two and a half years.

According to a statement from his media adviser, Bolaji Tunji, the minister highlighted progress in stabilising electricity generation, improving transmission capacity, and advancing reforms across the power value chain.

President Tinubu reportedly commended Adelabu for his efforts and granted him approval to pursue his political ambition in Oyo State.

The minister is expected to formally step down in the coming days, with the timing aimed at ensuring continuity in ongoing sector reforms before his exit.

His report also addressed recent challenges in the power sector, including reduced generation caused by gas supply issues, pipeline maintenance, and outstanding payments to gas suppliers.

A key part of his presentation was the National Integrated Electricity Policy and its Strategic Implementation Plan, designed to provide a long-term roadmap for energy security, increased access, and a more efficient electricity system.

Adelabu expressed appreciation to the President for his support, reaffirming his commitment to the development of the power sector and Nigeria’s broader economic growth.
