The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP), Federal Polytechnic Ngodo-Isuochi chapter in Abia State, has given the institution’s management a 21-day ultimatum to address several welfare and administrative issues or face possible industrial action.
In a letter dated May 26 and addressed to the Rector, Dr. Pdi Ndubuisi, the union accused the management of failing to act on longstanding concerns despite repeated engagements through meetings, congresses, and official correspondence. According to ASUP, the unresolved issues have created growing industrial tension and weakened trust within the institution.
The union outlined six key grievances, including the alleged failure to facilitate staff enrolment into the National Housing Fund and the National Health Insurance Authority schemes, which it said have denied workers access to benefits guaranteed under existing laws.
ASUP also raised allegations surrounding the handling of funds approved for a borehole project, calling for an independent audit and warning that it could petition anti-corruption agencies, including the EFCC and ICPC, if the matter is not addressed.
The lecturers further complained about what they described as a shortage of essential drugs and medical supplies at the institution’s health centre, urging management to improve healthcare services and recruit competent medical personnel.
Another major concern is the alleged non-remittance of union check-off dues deducted from staff salaries since February 2026. ASUP argued that the failure to remit the funds violates provisions of the Trade Unions Act and the Nigerian Constitution.
The union stated that the ultimatum, adopted during its congress on May 22, takes effect from May 26, the date the letter was received by management. It warned that if the issues remain unresolved after the 21-day period, it would activate all lawful trade union mechanisms, including industrial action.
Despite the ultimatum, ASUP said it remains open to dialogue and negotiations should the institution’s management invite its leadership for discussions before the deadline expires.
When contacted, the institution’s Public Relations Officer, Dr. Anukaenyi Blessing, declined to comment, saying she was not a member of the management board and could not speak on the matter.
