LP crisis deepens as Otti, party leaders reject Abure’s 2027 nomination forms

The Labour Party (LP) is facing a fresh internal crisis as Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, and the party’s national leadership have rejected the ongoing sale of nomination forms being carried out by former National Chairman, Julius Abure, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party described the forms being issued by Abure as invalid and “worthless paper,” insisting that he no longer has the authority to act on behalf of the party following court rulings and Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) recognition of Senator Nenadi Usman as the legitimate national chairman.

The National Publicity Secretary of the party, Ken Asogwa, warned aspirants and members of the public against obtaining any nomination forms from Abure or his associates, stressing that such documents would not be recognised.

He said official nomination forms for all elective positions ahead of the 2027 elections could only be obtained from the party’s national secretariat in Utako, Abuja.

According to him, “any so-called Labour Party nomination form obtained from Julius Abure or any other unauthorised source is nothing but worthless paper being peddled by political fraudsters.”

The party further accused Abure of defying court judgments and INEC directives, describing his continued actions as impersonation and contempt of court.

However, the Abure-led faction insisted it remains the legitimate leadership of the party, arguing that its case is still before the Supreme Court and that its mandate has not expired.

Stakeholders loyal to Abure also maintained that the sale of nomination forms was a precautionary step to avoid a leadership vacuum, adding that consultations were ongoing across the 36 states.
