A yet-to-be-identified man has been shot dead while several others sustained injuries following a violent clash during the All Progressives Congress (APC) primary election in the Ikotun area of Lagos State.
The incident reportedly occurred on Saturday at a primary school in the Ile-Iwe area of Egbe, where the party was conducting House of Representatives primaries across the country.
Eyewitnesses said the election had been progressing peacefully before a disagreement broke out among rival supporters, which quickly escalated into chaos.
According to residents, the situation degenerated into violence, forcing attendees to flee for safety as gunshots were heard at the venue.
One resident said the injured victim was rushed away after being shot but later died on the way to the hospital.
Another witness described scenes of panic, with supporters jumping fences and hiding in nearby buildings as the violence spread.
A police source confirmed that operatives were deployed to the scene to restore order after the clash, though it was not immediately clear if any arrests were made.
The Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, Abimbola Adebisi, had not issued an official statement at the time of filing this report. Party officials were also yet to comment on the incident.
Electoral violence remains a recurring concern in Nigeria, particularly during party primaries and general elections, often resulting in casualties and disruption of the political process.
