Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has engaged Washington-based lobbying firm Von Batten-Montague-York, L.C., to enhance his reputation in the United States.
Documents filed with the U.S. Department of Justice show the agreement was signed on March 9 and 10, 2026, by the firm’s managing partner, Karl Von Batten, and Nigerian politician Fabiyi Oladimeji on Atiku’s behalf.
The contract aims to shape perceptions of Atiku among U.S. policymakers and counter narratives linked to the Nigerian government. The firm will facilitate meetings with U.S. officials, including Congress members, and provide advisory services on policy positioning and engagement strategy.
The engagement includes lobbying, government affairs activities, and public relations efforts to improve understanding of Atiku’s leadership and policy vision. Messaging strategies, narrative positioning, and reputational advisory services are also part of the scope.
Valued at $1.2 million for 12 months and payable in six instalments, the contract comes as Atiku is viewed as a potential contender in the 2027 presidential election amid uncertainty within the African Democratic Congress (ADC), which he and other opposition figures are affiliated with.
The lobbying firm also plans to engage U.S. authorities over INEC’s derecognition of ADC factions, warning that the move could impede the opposition’s ability to participate effectively in Nigeria’s elections.
The firm urged President Bola Tinubu to ensure future elections are credible and reflective of the people’s will.
