TotalEnergies, NNPC renew partnership on methane reduction

TotalEnergies EP Nigeria Limited and NNPC Limited have renewed their cooperation agreement on the deployment of AUSEA technology for another 24 months, extending a partnership that began in December 2023.

AUSEA, an acronym for Airborne Ultralight Spectrometer for Environmental Applications, is a drone-based technology developed by TotalEnergies in collaboration with France’s National Centre for Scientific Research and the University of Reims. The technology enables precise detection and measurement of methane and carbon monoxide emissions, helping operators identify emission sources and implement mitigation measures.

Country Chair and Managing Director of TotalEnergies Nigeria, Matthieu Bouyer, said the company remains committed to reducing greenhouse gas emissions as part of its responsible energy strategy.

Bouyer noted that TotalEnergies became the first exploration and production operator in Nigeria to eliminate routine gas flaring across all its operated assets by the end of 2023 and is targeting near-zero methane emissions by 2030.

According to him, AUSEA monitoring campaigns are now conducted annually across all operated facilities, while more than 2,500 sensors were installed in 2025 to enable real-time methane leak detection and faster response to incidents.

He explained that renewing the agreement with NNPC would support efforts to improve methane measurement, accelerate emission reduction initiatives and enhance the environmental sustainability of Nigeria’s oil and gas resources.

Bouyer added that the partnership represents an important step toward lowering emissions while ensuring better utilisation of the country’s energy resources.
