The Director-General of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Zubaida Umar, has reaffirmed the agency’s commitment to complying with the Federal Character principle in its recruitment and administrative processes.
Umar made the commitment during an interactive session with the Federal Character Commission (FCC) in Abuja, where she met with the commission’s chairman, Hulayat Omidiran, and other commissioners.
The meeting was part of the FCC’s routine engagement with heads of federal Ministries, Departments and Agencies to explain its procedures, guidelines and expectations.
Umar assured the commission that NEMA would continue to uphold transparency, fairness and due process in its management processes and other activities.
FCC Commissioner Pam Botmang commended Umar’s leadership and encouraged NEMA and the commission to maintain regular engagement to strengthen compliance with Federal Character requirements.
The Federal Character Commission is constitutionally responsible for promoting equitable distribution of public offices and socio-economic opportunities across Nigeria.
The commission’s engagement with federal agencies is intended to promote balanced representation, inclusiveness and national unity in the public service.
NEMA, which coordinates disaster management and emergency response across Nigeria, is expected to apply these principles particularly in its recruitment and administrative processes.
