Nigeria, UK to Collaborate on Disinformation and AI Misuse

Nigeria and the United Kingdom are exploring ways to work together to tackle disinformation, misinformation and the misuse of artificial intelligence.

The proposed partnership was discussed on Wednesday during a meeting between the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Idris Mohammad, and British High Commissioner Peter Vowles at the minister’s office in Abuja.

Idris disclosed the meeting in a post on his verified X account, saying both officials discussed the growing spread of fake news as Nigeria approaches another election cycle.

He warned that misleading information could distort public understanding and weaken confidence in the electoral process if left unchecked.

The minister said stronger partnerships with countries such as the UK were needed to promote accurate information, responsible communication and public awareness. He added that the challenge required collective action because digital platforms allow unverified content to spread rapidly across borders.

The discussions also covered ways to strengthen Nigeria-UK relations through improved public communication and practical cooperation on emerging information challenges. Idris said international partnerships would help ensure citizens have access to credible information and support efforts to protect electoral integrity.

Vowles, who assumed office about eight weeks ago, said closer cooperation would benefit both countries. He identified misinformation and the misuse of artificial intelligence as areas where Nigeria and the UK could develop shared approaches.
