President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has directed the immediate rollout of about 100,000 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) conversion kits nationwide as part of efforts to reduce transportation costs.
The move is aimed at expanding alternative energy options for vehicles amid rising petrol and diesel prices linked to global tensions in the Middle East.
Executive Chairman of the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas (Pi-CNG), Ismaeel Ahmed, disclosed this after meeting with the President in Abuja.
Ahmed said Tinubu is closely monitoring global developments, particularly the impact of the United States-Israel conflict with Iran on energy prices and transportation costs in Nigeria.
According to him, the President has instructed the initiative to accelerate the rollout of CNG infrastructure and other alternative mobility solutions across the country.
Ahmed explained that the conversion kits will be distributed within the next two to three weeks, enabling vehicle owners, including tricycle operators, to convert their engines to run on gas.
He added that the government is also expanding infrastructure to support the transition, with about 77 CNG refilling stations currently under development nationwide.
The initiative is also collaborating with local and international manufacturers to support vehicle conversion and establish assembly lines for CNG-powered and electric vehicles in Nigeria.
