Soldiers, police block fresh Edo jailbreak

Fresh attempt by inmates to forcibly release themselves from the Maximum Correctional Centre popularly called White House on Sapele Road, Benin City was stalled by security operatives, Checkout Magazine learnt.

Recall that while the #EndSARS protests lasted, the White House and the Oko Medium Correctional Centre on Airport Road, Benin were attacked, with 1,993 inmates, mostly condemned criminals were released, most of whom yet to be re-arrested.

Valuable property were either looted or destroyed, and many officials of the two correctional centres in Benin were injured.

The White House was still being reconstructed as yesterday’s attempted jailbreak happened.

Security personnel responded quickly, blocking half of the busy Sapele Road beside the correctional centre, leading to heavy traffic congestion, according to The Nation.

In a statement by the Spokesman of the state command of correctional facilities, Aminu Superman, the State Controller, Felix Lawrence confirmed that
there was “a disturbance” at the centre called White House by some awaiting trial inmates, especially one Jose, who was recaptured after last year’s jailbreak.

His words, “Some awaiting trial inmates, especially the recaptured escapees, at about 12.30pm started protesting, which led to a confrontation between them and the convicted inmates. Reinforcement was immediately mobilised from the state headquarters to enforce law and order.

“The situation has been completely controlled and the custodial centre is calm. There was no escape of any of the inmates or death.”
