The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, LASTMA, impounded 84 commercial and private vehicles during a weekend enforcement operation across several parts of the state.
The operation covered Idumota, Iddo, Ijora-Olopa, Costain and Onipanu, with the agency targeting traffic violations that have contributed to congestion and threatened road safety. LASTMA also reported that some of its officials were assaulted by suspected miscreants who resisted the exercise.
The agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department, Adebayo Taofiq, said particular attention was given to commercial buses reversing against traffic along the one-way stretch from Iddo to Idumota through Cater Bridge.
Taofiq warned that motorists approaching the bridge could have little warning when vehicles unlawfully reverse against traffic, increasing the risk of collisions, injuries and fatalities. He said some suspects allegedly involved in attacking officials and damaging operational vehicles were arrested.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, described the enforcement as necessary to tackle repeated traffic violations and restore discipline on major corridors. He also warned transport operators against using under-bridge spaces, road setbacks and other unauthorised areas as garages or loading points.
The agency urged motorists, commercial bus operators and transport unions to stop driving against traffic, dangerous reversing, illegal parking, indiscriminate loading and the occupation of unauthorised spaces. LASTMA said further violations would attract enforcement under Lagos State traffic laws.
Taofiq urged residents to report dangerous driving, traffic obstructions, reckless motorists and other violations through LASTMA’s toll-free short code, 3367, as the agency continues its enforcement campaign across the state.
