Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf has called for the continued rotation of Nigeria’s presidency between the North and South, urging northern presidential aspirants to defer their ambitions until 2031.
Yusuf made the call on Sunday at the Kano Government House while unveiling 50 vehicles donated by Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, for APC campaign mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
The governor said each region should be allowed to produce a president for two consecutive terms, arguing that completing the cycle would give administrations sufficient time to implement major policies and development programmes.
Yusuf urged support for President Bola Tinubu to complete a second term, saying this would allow the South to complete its proposed two-term cycle before presidential power returns to the North in 2031.
He said rotational presidency should promote fairness, equity, national cohesion and mutual trust by giving different parts of the country a sense of belonging. His position effectively calls on northern political stakeholders to wait beyond the 2027 election before seeking the presidency.
The governor also urged politicians and political parties to conduct peaceful, issue-based campaigns ahead of the 2027 elections. He called for greater focus on policies, programmes and development plans rather than personal attacks and inflammatory rhetoric.
Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peaceful democratic engagement and urged political actors to prioritise the unity, peace and development of Kano State and Nigeria above partisan differences.
