Lagos State Deputy Governor and All Progressives Congress governorship candidate for the 2027 election, Kadri Obafemi Hamzat, has outlined plans to address challenges facing residents, including housing, transportation, waste management and the business environment. He presented his proposals at a town hall organised by The Platform Nigeria at The Covenant Place, Iganmu, Lagos, where he engaged young residents and other governorship candidates.
Hamzat identified child welfare as a priority for his first 100 days in office, proposing a dedicated Child Welfare Administration Agency separate from the Ministry of Youth and Social Development. He said the agency would work towards ensuring that every child under 18 was either in school or receiving vocational training, while also addressing malnutrition among children aged zero to five.
On the business environment, he promised to review unauthorised levies and multiple collections affecting small businesses and commercial transport operators. He also proposed a State Economic Council involving state and local governments to harmonise charges, alongside capacity-building programmes to help micro, small and medium enterprises improve bookkeeping and staff management.
Hamzat said his administration would expand waste management infrastructure through additional transfer loading stations, materials recovery facilities and increased collection capacity. He cited the arrival of about 160 waste trucks and plans to develop facilities at Solous and Agbara, while identifying waste-to-energy as part of the state’s longer-term strategy.
On housing, the governorship candidate pledged to deepen the mortgage system and complete ongoing projects. He also proposed financing arrangements that would allow prospective homeowners to make lower initial payments and spread repayments over longer periods.
Additionally, he advocated a State Wealth Fund to support long-term development beyond individual political administrations.
Hamzat said he would build on existing infrastructure, including the Blue and Red Line rail projects and the Omi Eko waterways initiative, while improving transportation to reduce commuting times. He also pointed to progress in public ambulance services, fire and rescue operations, and students’ performance in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination, saying further improvements were still needed.
To promote accountability, Hamzat proposed publishing a 100-point document known as the HAMZAT Compact or Amsa Compact, detailing specific commitments, locations, costs and responsible officials for residents to monitor. The town hall also featured governorship candidates Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, Funso Doherty and Deji Doherty, who engaged young Lagosians on issues including education, jobs, housing and transportation.
