FG Orders Full Independent Probe into Borno Airstrike

The Federal Government has ordered a full and independent investigation into the recent airstrike in the Jilli axis of Borno State.

The Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, disclosed this in a statement, noting that while the operation was deliberate and intelligence-driven, a comprehensive review would be conducted.

According to him, the probe will assess the intelligence, targeting process, and execution of the strike, with a view to addressing any gaps and ensuring accountability where necessary.

“The Federal Government has ordered a full and independent investigation into the incident. This will review intelligence, targeting, and execution, and we will address any gaps and ensure accountability where needed. The protection of civilian lives remains a core obligation of the Armed Forces,” he said.

He added that the government is working with the governments of Borno and Yobe states, alongside emergency agencies, to provide humanitarian support to affected families, while also strengthening operational safeguards.

The minister expressed condolences to victims’ families but maintained that the operation followed sustained intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance.

He explained that the Jilli axis, locally known as “Kasu Daulaye,” has long functioned as an insurgent-controlled enclave where terrorist groups, including Boko Haram and ISWAP, operate.

According to him, intelligence reports confirmed that the area was used to collect levies, procure supplies, and coordinate attacks.

He further revealed that the arrest of a 15-year-old ISWAP courier helped reinforce intelligence on the extent of terrorist activity in the area.

The government also cited confirmation from Borno State Governor, Babagana Zulum, that Jilli and nearby markets had been shut down years earlier due to insurgent control.

Idris noted that the Bindul–Jilli corridor has remained a known terrorist route, with previous attacks, including an improvised explosive device (IED) incident in January 2026 and coordinated assaults in nearby areas earlier in April.

He stated that after a rigorous targeting process, the Nigerian Air Force, in collaboration with the Nigerian Army, carried out the strike to disrupt insurgent operations.

The Federal Government also called on the media to ensure responsible reporting on security matters, warning that misinformation could undermine national efforts.

Reaffirming its stance, the government said it remains committed to combating terrorism, improving operational precision, and ensuring accountability while working towards lasting peace.
