FG Approves Major Welfare Boost for Civil Servants, Raises Allowances

The Federal Government has approved a wide-ranging increase in allowances and welfare benefits for civil servants, in a move aimed at improving earnings and boosting morale across the public service.

The announcement was made in Abuja on Friday by the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, during a briefing on recent Federal Executive Council approvals.

According to her, the review covers workers under both the Consolidated Public Service Salary Structure (CONPSS) and the Consolidated Research and Allied Institutions Salary Structure (CONRAISS), with adjustments expected to cut across all grade levels.

She said key allowances, including duty tour allowance, estacode, and book allowance, have been revised, with a broad-based upward adjustment across the system.

A major highlight of the reforms is the approval of 100 per cent Duty Tour Allowance for civil servants attending training programmes, even when such programmes are held within their duty location.

The government also approved a new retirement exit package under the Contributory Pension Scheme, providing retirees with 100 per cent of their total annual emoluments in addition to their pension, effective January 1, 2026.

Walson-Jack described the reforms as part of efforts to ensure dignity in service and retirement, while also introducing an Employee Compensation Scheme to support workers affected by job-related injuries or death.

She said the measures respond to rising living costs and long-standing demands from labour unions for improved welfare in the public sector.
