Democracy Day: Tinubu to address National Assembly on June 12

President Bola Tinubu will address a joint session of the National Assembly on June 12 as part of activities marking Nigeria’s 2026 Democracy Day celebration.

The Federal Government unveiled a lineup of events to commemorate the anniversary, including a World Press Conference on June 4, special Juma’at prayers on June 5, an interdenominational church service on June 7, a public lecture on June 9, youth and women-focused programmes on June 10, a presidential broadcast on June 12, and a gala night.

Inaugurating the Inter-Ministerial Committee for the celebration, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said Democracy Day provides an opportunity to reflect on the sacrifices of Nigerians who fought for democratic rule.

Akume paid tribute to the late MKO Abiola and other pro-democracy activists whose struggles contributed to the recognition of June 12 as Nigeria’s Democracy Day.

He said the anniversary would also allow the Federal Government to showcase achievements recorded under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and reaffirm its commitment to democratic governance, institutional reforms, and national development.

According to him, the administration intends to use the occasion to highlight progress made in strengthening democratic institutions and implementing reforms despite prevailing socio-economic challenges.

With preparations already underway, Akume directed committee members to begin immediate implementation of approved activities, stressing that the celebration would be “modest but purposeful” in line with the government’s commitment to fiscal discipline.

The committee, chaired by the SGF, comprises key ministers, security chiefs, and senior government officials. Nigeria observes Democracy Day every June 12 in honour of the historic 1993 presidential election, widely believed to have been won by the late MKO Abiola, and as a symbol of the country’s democratic journey.
