Companies responsible for adulterated fuel should take responsibility – NUJ

The Nigerian Union of Journalists has urged companies responsible for importing the contaminated Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), to take responsibility and seek restitution for the national mishap.

This was contained in a statement by the NUJ titled: ‘PMS Methanol issue too sensitive to be politicized,’ and signed by its president, Chris Isiguzo.

Isiguzo noted that the country has enjoyed the uninterrupted availability of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) over the last four years.

He said, “The present challenge, the Union understands, is a result of the importation of PMS with higher than normal methanol level. Since the unfortunate development, it is regrettable to observe that there have been some blame games between the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC, and some of its designated importers over the ‘bad fuel’.”

He said there should be a limit to the politicising of such a sensitive matter, especially with the measures already undertaken by the management of the NNPC and the presidential inquest on the way.

He stressed that focus should be on the conclusiveness of the probe panel as ordered by President Muhammadu Buhari, while adequate compensation should be paid to all verifiable claims of those whose vehicles may have been affected by the high methanol PMS.

Isiguzo further enjoined the NNPC through the Midstream and Downstream Regulatory Authority to monitor filling stations to ensure that those with products dispense them and not cause artificial scarcity.
