Centre Marks 1,000th HIFU Fibroid Treatment Milestone

The Fibroid Care Centre at Nordica has reached 1,000 High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound treatments for fibroids, five years after introducing the ultrasound-guided procedure in Nigeria and West Africa.

The centre marked the milestone with a White Party in Lekki, Lagos, attended by healthcare professionals, former patients, partners and other stakeholders involved in fibroid care.

HIFU uses focused ultrasound energy to target fibroid tissue without a surgical incision. The centre said the procedure can offer eligible patients a less invasive treatment option, with recovery potentially shorter than that associated with some conventional surgical procedures.

FCC at Nordica said it began its HIFU programme in 2021 and has since focused on using the technology to expand treatment options for women living with uterine fibroids and adenomyosis.

Fibroids are non-cancerous growths that develop in or around the uterus and may cause heavy menstrual bleeding, pelvic pain, abdominal swelling and reproductive difficulties. Treatment choices depend on factors including the size and location of the fibroids, symptoms, age and fertility plans.

Former patients shared experiences at the milestone event, including reports of reduced menstrual bleeding and swelling following treatment. Another testimonial from a patient referred from Equatorial Guinea described the individual as pain-free after undergoing the procedure.

The centre said the milestone reflected its investment in HIFU technology and specialised expertise, while noting that the procedure is not suitable for every patient and requires individual medical assessment. It said it would continue using technology and patient-centred care to expand options for women managing fibroids and adenomyosis.
