Amend the constitution to give women more opportunities – Sonaiya

Former presidential candidate under the KOWA party, Prof Remi Sonaiya, has called for the introduction of provisions in the constitution that will guarantee more women in leadership positions.

She said this at the 15th Annual Lecture of AELEX, a leading commercial and dispute resolution law firm- with the theme, “The Nigeria we want: economic, political and social justice.”

According to her, such a country should provide an opportunity for vibrant young women to take positions of leadership and responsibility.

She said Nigerians must think about why women sit on boards of companies, are professors, judges, and do well in other professions, but are not considered fit for political leadership or given a chance.

“We must engage male advocates who will speak for women so that we can begin to have people who have the mind to serve and lead.

“To bring this about, we must continue to advocate for a fundamental change of our constitution so that we will have a bigger say in the way our affairs are being run,” Sonaiya said.
