LAWMA Clears Illegal Structures Along Alaba Rago Corridor

The Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) says it has cleared illegal traders, squatters and unauthorised structures along the Alaba Rago setback on the Lagos-Badagry Expressway as part of efforts to restore environmental order in the area.

LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, said the enforcement operation became necessary due to persistent indiscriminate waste disposal, obstruction of sanitation activities and illegal occupation of the expressway setback by traders and squatters.

According to him, the exercise reflects the Lagos State Government’s zero tolerance for environmental nuisance and activities that undermine structured waste management across the state.

Gbadegesin stressed that road setbacks are not designated for trading or habitation, warning that continued encroachment on public infrastructure would not be tolerated. He added that the operation aims to improve sanitation standards, protect public infrastructure and promote environmental sustainability along one of Lagos’ major transport corridors.

He urged traders and residents to make use of approved market spaces and designated waste disposal channels while emphasising the importance of environmental responsibility in achieving a cleaner and safer Lagos.

The operation was carried out by LAWMA in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and the Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources after the expiration of a three-day removal notice served on occupants of the affected area.

Several carts operated by illegal waste handlers and cart pushers were also seized during the exercise as authorities intensified efforts to curb indiscriminate waste disposal within the corridor.
