Lagos Unveils First-of-Its-Kind Ferry Safety Training Programme in Africa

The Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), in partnership with Interferry, has launched Africa’s first Ferry Safety Development and Mentoring Programme aimed at improving safety standards and operational efficiency in water transport.

The programme, scheduled to begin in May 2026, is designed to strengthen the capacity of ferry operators and align local practices with global maritime safety standards.

Interferry, which holds consultative status with the International Maritime Organization, will provide expert mentorship, supported by facilitators from maritime institutions, private operators, and regulatory agencies across Nigeria.

A verification exercise conducted on March 18, 2026, ensured that only qualified applicants were selected for the programme.

A total of 50 participants were chosen for the pilot phase, including ferry captains, deckhands, marine engineers, safety officers, compliance professionals, and fleet managers.

Participants will undergo intensive training covering ferry design and construction, safety management systems, maritime regulations, and maintenance practices.

The programme will adopt a hybrid model, combining self-paced online learning, virtual mentoring, and monthly hands-on practical sessions.

It will be formally inaugurated on May 6, 2026, at the LASWA Head Office in Ikoyi, where stakeholders will engage with participants and mentors while gaining deeper insight into the initiative.

Stakeholders say the programme underscores the Lagos State Government’s commitment to improving waterway safety and building a more professional and efficient ferry transport system.
