We mustn’t play politics with traditional institutions – Tambuwal

Governor Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto State has admonished Nigerian leaders and stakeholders against politicizing issues relating to monarchy, faith, and security.

His admonition comes on the heels of the deposition of the Emir of Kano, Muhammad Sanusi II, by the Kano State Government, led by Abdullahi Ganduje.

Tambuwal made his statement when the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi, paid him a courtesy visit in company with the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Abubakar, in Sokoto on Saturday.

Other monarchs who also went were the emirs of Gombe, Alhaji Abubakar Shehu III; that of Keffi, Dr Shehu Yamusa; and that of Lere, Garba Muhammad, who was also a one-time military administrator of Sokoto State.

Tambuwal said, “Sometimes we play politics. We must desist from playing politics with our traditional institutions.

“We must desist from playing politics with religion. We must desist from playing politics with security.

“These issues are beyond politics; we must try as much as possible to cooperate and work together for the unity and stability of this country.

“I implore all the traditional rulers to be working and praying together for the peace and continued existence of Nigeria.”
