President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has attributed the peace enjoyed in many parts of Nigeria to the vigilance and sacrifice of the Armed Forces. He assured families of fallen soldiers that their sacrifices would not be forgotten.
Speaking during the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD), Tinubu reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to the welfare and dignity of serving military personnel. The ceremony in Abuja was represented by Vice President Kashim Shettima, with governors, top military officers, and diplomatic officials in attendance.
The AFCRD, organised annually by the Ministry of Defence, honours personnel who died in wars, peace support missions, and internal security operations, including ongoing counter-terrorism efforts. This year’s event coincided with reported operational gains by the Armed Forces in the Northeast and other regions.
“The brave men and women of the Nigerian Armed Forces sacrificed everything for our country. Their courage sustains our freedom and peace,” Tinubu said. “We remember the fallen, support their families, and ensure serving personnel are adequately equipped and motivated to discharge their duties.”
The President paid tribute to the families of fallen service members, acknowledging their pain and loss. He also commended serving personnel for their discipline and professionalism across land, sea, and air operations, noting their critical role in protecting the nation’s sovereignty.
The ceremony featured a state parade, inspection of the Guard of Honour, wreath-laying at the cenotaph of the Unknown Soldier, prayers, a minute of silence, and the symbolic release of pigeons to signify peace and national unity. Key dignitaries, including the Senate President, Deputy Speaker of the House, Chief of Defence Staff, service chiefs, and Chief Justice of Nigeria, participated in the wreath-laying.
At a Regimental Dinner at the Armed Forces Officers’ Mess, Asokoro, Abuja, Tinubu noted that AFCRD represents Nigeria’s military heritage and the country’s recognition of troops’ resilience against complex threats. Defence Minister Gen. Christopher Musa reiterated that the nation will continue to support fallen and serving soldiers, describing the celebration as a week-long programme of honour and recognition.
Chief of Defence Staff Gen. Olufemi Oluyede highlighted the professionalism of troops and the importance of military families, while stressing collaboration between the Armed Forces, security agencies, and communities to sustain peace and national security.
