The Executive Chairman of the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS), Dr. Zacch Adedeji, has said the recently implemented tax reforms are designed to support sustainable economic growth and strengthen national institutions, not to persecute political opponents.
Speaking during a national television interview on Monday, Adedeji said tax reforms often attract political debates, but stressed that the primary goal of the new framework is economic stability and long-term development.
He dismissed claims that the Federal Government could use the reforms to selectively target opposition figures, describing such fears as misplaced and inconsistent with the intent of the policy.
According to him, the reforms are driven by transparency, accountability and the need to build strong institutions that function independently of political influence.
Responding to concerns about possible abuse ahead of elections, Adedeji praised President Bola Tinubu’s decision to continue with fiscal reforms despite political risks. “We need to commend the courage of Mr. President, that even though there is an election coming, he has chosen statesmanship over politics,” he said.
Adedeji explained that the new tax framework aims to fix structural weaknesses, simplify compliance, and encourage voluntary participation rather than fear-driven enforcement, noting that past mistrust of public institutions has shaped public scepticism.
He added that the NRS is prioritising automation, rule-based processes and reduced discretion in tax administration to ensure fairness, build taxpayer trust and create a predictable environment that supports investment and sustainable growth.
