Resident Doctors Extend Strike Ultimatum by Four Weeks

The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors has extended its strike ultimatum to the Federal Government by four weeks after reviewing progress on its outstanding demands.

The association said the extension followed an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting, giving the government more time to implement agreed resolutions before its next NEC meeting in July.

NARD warned that an industrial dispute still exists and cautioned that it could embark on a nationwide strike if key welfare and professional issues remain unresolved.

Among its demands are the release of the 2026 Medical Residency Training Fund, payment of salary and allowance arrears, improved salary systems for House Officers and implementation of recommendations protecting healthcare workers.

The association also called for the resolution of disputes at the Obafemi Awolowo University Teaching Hospitals Complex and urged the Lagos University Teaching Hospital to provide call meals for resident doctors.

NARD said several issues, including outstanding allowances, excessive workload, delayed promotions and implementation of the reviewed CONMESS salary structure, remain unresolved despite some progress.

The association directed its National Officers’ Committee to prepare for possible industrial action if the Federal Government fails to meet its demands within the extended four-week deadline.
