PDP will prevail despite legal battles, says Hashim

Presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Dr. Gbenga Hashim, has expressed confidence that the party will win the 2027 general election despite ongoing legal disputes involving its members.

Hashim said the PDP would unseat the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), insisting that no legal or administrative manoeuvres could derail Nigeria’s multiparty democratic system.

Speaking in Kaduna, the businessman-turned-politician alleged that the APC was deploying legal and institutional tactics aimed at weakening opposition parties ahead of the next election cycle, warning that such actions pose risks to democratic competition.

According to him, similar attempts to undermine political pluralism in Nigeria’s past were defeated by popular resistance. “We have travelled this road before under Abacha’s dictatorship, and it ended in victory for genuine democracy while the plotters of one-man rule were disgraced,” Hashim said.

He reaffirmed that Nigeria’s commitment to multiparty democracy was firmly rooted in its constitutional foundations. “Our founding fathers deliberately chose multiparty democracy, and by the grace of God, that legacy will be preserved. No group, no matter how determined, will succeed in destroying it,” he added.

Hashim cautioned against a drift towards authoritarianism, drawing parallels with Zaire under the late Mobutu Sese Seko. “One-man or one-party rule will not happen here. Nigeria will not be reduced to a tragic parody of democracy,” he said.

He also raised concerns over what he described as selective administrative decisions in the registration of political parties, urging Nigerians and the international community to remain vigilant in defending democratic norms.

Hashim expressed confidence that Nigerians would peacefully and constitutionally defend democracy and remove the APC from power through the ballot in 2027.
