The Nigerian Meteorological Agency has begun testing a digital platform designed to give farmers and other agricultural stakeholders easier access to location-specific weather and climate information.
The NiMet Data Hub, developed with the International Livestock Research Institute and Crea2Solutions, has progressed from the design stage to an advanced Minimum Viable Product, according to a statement issued by the agency.
Work on the platform began in February 2026 under the Climate Services for Youth and Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa programmes. NiMet said the project had become a testable product by July and was designed to provide historical, monitored and forecast climate information.
The agency said the initiative was developed in response to challenges including fragmented agricultural data, limited coordination among information providers and difficulties converting technical forecasts into practical advice. Stakeholder engagements have focused on mapping Nigeria’s agro-meteorological data and advisory landscape and identifying gaps.
The platform is expected to serve farmers, pastoralists, extension professionals, researchers, government institutions and private advisory providers. NiMet said its resources, including online map rooms and agricultural climate products, would feed into the system to support context-specific agro-weather advisories.
According to the agency, the project also seeks to strengthen institutional cooperation, improve last-mile communication and promote gender and social inclusion. ILRI’s contribution includes organising research data and developing digital tools to make climate information more useful to partners and decision-makers.
NiMet and its partners are expected to continue testing and refining the Data Hub ahead of wider deployment. The agency said the platform would help connect meteorological information with agricultural planning, risk management and efforts to reduce climate-related losses.
