The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority has warned children, teenagers and young adults against using roller skating shoes on highways across the state.
The warning was contained in a statement by LASTMA’s Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, who said the growing practice posed risks to motorists, pedestrians and the skaters themselves.
According to the agency, users of roller skates often cross carriageways indiscriminately and glide alongside moving vehicles without safety equipment or adult supervision.
LASTMA urged parents and guardians to discourage children and young people from engaging in the practice on highways, stressing the need to protect them as well as motorists and other road users.
The agency also appealed to schools to advise students against skating on highways and other busy roads, where interactions with moving vehicles could expose them to accidents.
It said Lagos had several designated recreational facilities where roller skating could be practised in safer environments without putting the lives of skaters and other road users at risk.
LASTMA reiterated the need for responsible use of recreational equipment and urged families to guide young people towards designated facilities rather than allowing them to skate on highways.
