The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) says it rescued 353 victims involved in road crashes and emergency incidents across the state between January and May 2026.
LASTMA General Manager, Olalekan Bakare-Oki, disclosed this while reviewing the activities of the agency’s Rescue and Emergency Response Unit. According to a statement issued by the Director of Public Affairs and Enlightenment, Adebayo Taofiq, the rescued victims included 207 adult men, 137 adult women and nine male children.
Bakare-Oki said the figures reflect the agency’s commitment to preserving lives through prompt emergency interventions at accident scenes across Lagos. He praised members of the rescue team for their professionalism and dedication in responding to emergencies.
The LASTMA boss, however, urged motorists, commercial drivers, motorcyclists and other road users to exercise greater caution as rainfall intensifies across the state. He noted that the rainy season increases the likelihood of crashes due to poor visibility, slippery roads, flooding and mechanical faults.
According to him, many of the accidents recorded during the period could have been prevented through responsible driving, adherence to speed limits, maintaining safe distances and carrying out regular vehicle maintenance.
Bakare-Oki advised motorists to ensure that essential vehicle components such as brakes, tyres, windscreen wipers, lights and steering systems are in good condition before travelling during adverse weather conditions. He also warned against speeding on wet roads, stressing that rainfall significantly reduces tyre grip and increases braking distances.
He further cautioned drivers against attempting to navigate flooded roads without first assessing their depth and condition, noting that such actions often lead to accidents, vehicle breakdowns and avoidable emergencies. He acknowledged the support of other emergency responders, healthcare workers and security agencies in rescue operations.
Bakare-Oki reaffirmed the commitment of the administration of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu to strengthening emergency response services through continuous personnel training, acquisition of modern rescue equipment and improved collaboration among relevant agencies. He urged road users to prioritise safety, patience and discipline, emphasising that strict compliance with traffic regulations remains the best way to prevent needless loss of lives.
