Lagos health commissioner gives breakdown of COVID-19 deaths in the state

The Lagos State Commissioner for Health, Prof. Akin Abayomi, has given a breakdown of coronavirus death calamities recorded in the state so far.

The commissioner who said this at a press briefing to give the situation report on COVID19 in Lagos on Sunday disclosed that only two coronavirus patients have died in the state’s isolation centre, while other patients died on their way to the hospital or in private facilities.

As of 10.20pm on Saturday, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control said Lagos State has recorded 306 confirmed COVID-19 cases, 93 discharges and 13 deaths, PUNCH reports.

The commissioner said, “Out of the 14 fatalities we’ve had, only two of them have happened in our Infectious Disease Hospital, Yaba and these two are examples of cases that have presented to us in a very late stage where it is very little we could do to save their lives.

“Most of them have died either en route to the hospital or in private facilities where they have been trying to avoid coming to our isolation facilities.”

He added that early presentation of COVID-19 symptoms by patients would help provide the best opportunity for them to survive the infection.
