Lagos cautions against open defecation

It could easily lead to disease outbreak.
The Lagos State Government has residents against open defecation because it could result in the outbreak of communicable diseases.

The Special Adviser, Office of Civic Engagement, Princess Aderemi Adebowale gave the warning at the sensitization programme on open defecation held yesterday at Ajeromi Ifelodun LGA, Lagos.

According to Adebowale, the sensitization was organized to ensure citizens join the global crusade, spread awareness, inspire environmentally-friendly actions and support in facilitating the provision of sustainable sanitation practices capable of promoting economic growth and well-being of the citizenry.

“Open defecation is a public menace because it could easily lead to an outbreak of communicable diseases such as cholera, typhoid, diarrhea and other gastro-intestinal infections. During the rainy season, in which we are now, water supplies can become contaminated with such faecal matter; we all know that human faeces contain bacteria and germs which consequently contaminate the sources of water people use for drinking and many other purposes,” she said.
