Senate President Godswill Akpabio has urged political actors to avoid violence and protect lives as preparations intensify for the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio made the call while welcoming senators back from recess during the chamber’s first plenary sitting since July. He said political competition should not undermine national unity, public safety or the Senate’s responsibility to Nigerians.
The Senate President acknowledged the insecurity affecting communities, including families whose relatives remain in captivity, as well as the impact of flooding and rising living costs. He said the legislature must respond through effective oversight, legislation and appropriation while urging security agencies to intensify efforts to rescue captives and protect vulnerable communities.
Akpabio also cautioned politicians against intimidation, violence and misinformation during the election build-up. He specifically highlighted the growing use of artificial intelligence to create or manipulate campaign content, urging participants to conduct political contests responsibly.
He said senators must continue working until the end of their mandates despite the political campaigns. According to him, lawmakers were elected to serve the country and should remain focused on their legislative responsibilities while seeking to strengthen national unity.
Ahead of Nigeria’s 66th Independence anniversary, Akpabio called for patriotism and continued efforts to improve the country. He urged politicians to campaign honourably and debate their differences while remembering that Nigerians would have to continue living together after the elections.
The Senate sitting also observed a minute’s silence in honour of Dr Adamu Fika, a former Director-General of the National Assembly and Clerk of the Senate, who died on August 6.
