The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) in Bauchi State says it handled 9,969 complaints between January and October 2026, with 6,664 cases still pending.
The state coordinator, Yachit Dala, disclosed this in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria on Wednesday in Bauchi, saying the commission had resolved 3,305 cases within the period.
She said the complaints involved gender-based violence, rape, sexual and domestic violence, mistreatment, abandonment of parental responsibilities, and violations of civil and political rights.
According to Dala, the commission receives, assesses and registers complaints to facilitate their amicable resolution. It also investigates allegations and sets up special panels or tribunals to hear petitions and review testimonies.
She added that the NHRC provides support to victims and makes recommendations aimed at resolving cases, while working to address reported human rights violations.
Dala identified inadequate funding, low public awareness and illiteracy as major challenges affecting the commission’s operations.
She urged members of the public to report abuse cases and called on youth and women’s groups to lead campaigns against human rights violations.
