The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has warned universities against issuing admission letters to candidates, insisting that it is the only authority legally empowered to issue official admission documents for tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
JAMB Registrar, Professor Segun Aina, stated this while receiving a delegation from Veritas University, Bwari, Abuja. He said the board’s authority covers admissions into universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Aina warned that admission letters issued directly by institutions could mislead candidates into believing they had secured legitimate admission. He noted that candidates often trust such documents because they appear to come from the institutions offering them admission.
The registrar urged universities involved in the practice to stop issuing their own admission letters and ensure candidates obtain the appropriate documents through the approved JAMB process.
He recalled that the Federal Ministry of Education had directed all tertiary institutions to process admissions through the Central Admissions Processing System (CAPS). According to him, admissions conducted outside the platform are considered illegal and invalid.
Aina stressed that institutions cannot replace the official JAMB admission letter with their own documents. Candidates must accept their admission offers on CAPS before the board issues the recognised admission letter.
He added that only admissions recognised through CAPS would be accepted for relevant official purposes, including mobilisation for the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC). The warning reinforces JAMB’s position that candidates must follow the approved admission process to avoid complications.
