Black Market Sets World Record With 51,000 Viewers

Nollywood crime thriller Black Market has set a new Guinness World Records mark after 51,000 qualifying viewers attended its premiere screening at Tafawa Balewa Square, Lagos, on September 26, 2026.

The audience surpassed the previous record of 43,624 viewers set by the Filipino film Felix Manalo in 2015 at the Philippine Arena. The new figure represents an increase of 7,376 viewers over the previous record.

Although event organisers reported total attendance of about 64,000 people, Guinness World Records recognised 51,000 as the qualifying figure. The count covered viewers who remained for the duration of the screening.

The record announcement was met with celebrations and fireworks at the venue, which also hosted Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat, Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Toke Benson and several Nollywood personalities.

Among the cast members present were Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Omowunmi Dada, Scarlet Gomez, Uzor Arukwe, Ibrahim Yekini, popularly known as Itele D Icon, and Susan Pwajok.

Directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and produced by Nora Awolowo, Black Market follows five women involved in a cross-border smuggling operation amid fuel scarcity and economic hardship.

The story takes a darker turn after the daughter of one of the women is kidnapped, putting the group’s operation and relationships under pressure. The record-setting premiere adds another major milestone to the film’s release.
