President Bola Tinubu has ordered an immediate, coordinated security operation to rescue victims of the recent mass abduction in Niger State.
The President directed the Armed Forces, Nigeria Police Force, Department of State Services and other security agencies to work together to secure the victims’ release and account for everyone taken captive.
The directive followed attacks on several communities in Borgu Local Government Area, where gunmen reportedly abducted scores of residents, including worshippers attending Friday prayers at a mosque in Kpenya village.
Borgu Local Government Chairman Abdullahi Mohammed Nasir said at least 60 people were kidnapped, while several others sustained gunshot injuries while attempting to escape. Residents estimated the number of abductees at between 60 and 80, although police have yet to confirm an official figure.
Tinubu condemned the attack and described those responsible as enemies of peace and humanity. He vowed that the perpetrators would be brought to justice and directed the Service Chiefs to provide him with regular updates until all the victims are accounted for.
The President also condoled with the families of those killed and assured relatives of the abducted residents that the Federal Government would deploy the necessary resources to ensure their safe return. He said the government would not relent in confronting terrorism and other forms of criminality.
Tinubu further pledged the Federal Government’s support to the Niger State Government, including assistance for recovery and relief efforts and the reinforcement of security in affected communities.
