Lagos Reintroduces Monthly Environmental Sanitation Exercise

The Lagos State Government has announced the resumption of its monthly environmental sanitation exercise, set to begin on Saturday, April 25, 2026, with strict enforcement measures and movement restrictions across the state.

Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, said in a statement that the exercise will now hold on the last Saturday of every month between 6:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m.

During this period, residents are expected to remain within their neighbourhoods to clean their homes, surroundings, and drainage channels.

He explained that enforcement teams from relevant agencies will be deployed to ensure compliance, while defaulters will face sanctions under existing environmental laws.

Agencies including the Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency, Lagos Waste Management Authority, and Kick Against Indiscipline will monitor adherence before and during the exercise.

The state government said waste collection trucks will also be deployed to support proper disposal of refuse generated during the cleanup.

In addition, incentives will be introduced to reward the cleanest local government areas and streets to encourage participation and healthy competition.

The sanitation exercise, which had been suspended in 2016, was revived under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu as part of efforts to improve hygiene, tackle waste management challenges, and reduce flooding across Lagos.
