World’s richest man, Jeff Bezos donates $98.5 million to 32 organizations that help homeless families

Amazon CEO and world’s richest man, Jeff Bezos has announced that he is donating $98.5 million in 2019 to 32 organizations that help shelter homeless families.

The billionaire’s charity foundation, the Bezos Day 1 Fund, announced the donations on Thursday. Bezos launched the foundation in September 2018, pledging $2 billion to fund it.

The foundation has two stated aims: funding organizations that help homeless families, and launching Montessori-inspired preschools.

The donations this year went to 32 groups in 23 states, and ranged in size from $1.25 million to $5 million.

Last year Bezos gave $97.5 million to organizations fighting homelessness to 24 organizations in 16 states. Thus far the fund has not announced any donations toward founding Montessori schools.

Bezos has an estimated net worth of $109 billion, making him the richest man in the world and followed closely by Bill Gates as the two have gone back and forth in first place in recent days, as the price of Amazon and Microsoft stock has fluctuated.

The rivalry has only grown more heated after the Pentagon made the controversial move to award a $10 billion cloud computing contract to Microsoft, a move which Bezos’ Amazon has challenged, claiming politics spoiled a fair contracting process.
