Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, is set to receive student-athletes who delivered an impressive performance at the 2026 World School Games Olympia held in Doha, Qatar.
The reception is aimed at celebrating what officials have described as a golden period for school sports in Lagos, following a strong medal haul in athletics, football and swimming between January 29 and 31.
Lagos-based schools dominated across the Under-11, Under-13 and Under-15 categories. Saint Saviour’s School finished first overall in the Under-11 division, while Grange School placed second in Under-13 and third in Under-15. Students from Riverbank School, British International School, Lagos Preparatory & Secondary School and Corona School also recorded notable performances.
The governor will also honour Team Lagos athletes who represented Nigeria at the African Youth Games in Angola from December 10 to 20, 2025. The contingent, which included students from Greensprings School and other institutions, made significant contributions to Nigeria’s overall medal tally.
Many of the athletes had earlier excelled at the National Youth Games before progressing to continental competition, reflecting what officials describe as the strength of the state’s sports development pathway.
Sanwo-Olu praised the athletes for their achievements, describing them as a source of pride for Lagos and a reflection of sustained investment in school sports, supported by parents, teachers and coaches.
Director General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, said the success highlights the impact of structured sports policies, noting that the athletes showcased confidence and resilience on the global stage.
The planned reception, beyond celebrating medals, is intended to reinforce the state’s commitment to nurturing young talents who can balance academic excellence with sporting achievement.
